For over 26 years, I had the privilege of walking alongside thousands of high school students. This extensive time in the classroom offered an unparalleled opportunity to observe, listen, and connect, providing an invaluable foundation for understanding the intricate tapestry of the human experience. I learned to read between the lines, recognize unspoken needs, and appreciate the diverse paths individuals take. This experience also taught me to identify underlying challenges, foster resilience, and celebrate each student's unique journey of growth and self-discovery.
Adding another dimension to my practice, I'm also a Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN). In this role, I empower clients to achieve greater well-being by addressing their unique health and lifestyle needs. My decades of experience in education combined with my holistic nutrition training have created a powerful foundation. These roles have collectively imbued me with exceptional communication skills, an innate ability to connect with diverse individuals, and a deep, intuitive empathy that allows me to truly walk alongside my clients on their journey to self-discovery and improved health.
For me, transitioning to Expressive Arts Therapy is simply a continuation of my lifelong passion for supporting people in impactful ways. My comprehensive understanding of the challenges we face – from academic pressures to personal health hurdles – combined with an unwavering commitment to your well-being, establishes me as a dedicated guide. I am ready to walk alongside you as you discover transformative pathways to mental health support, emotional growth, profound healing, and meaningful self-discovery.
At its heart, Expressive Arts Therapy is an intermodal, arts-based approach to therapy that empowers individuals to explore and address their emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges. In a safe and welcoming space, it helps you reconnect with your authentic self and amplify your inner voice through the transformative power of creative expression. This modality seamlessly integrates diverse art forms, including visual arts, creative writing, drama, music, voice, and movement, inviting you to discover new perspectives and profound healing.
Expressive Arts Therapy is a dynamic and integrative approach that harnesses the inherent power of creativity to facilitate healing and self-discovery. It recognizes that sometimes, words alone aren't enough to capture the depth of our experiences. By fluidly moving between various art forms, individuals can tap into their inner wisdom, process emotions, and gain new perspectives in a profoundly embodied and non-verbal way.
Visual Arts: Beyond simply drawing or painting, visual arts in expressive therapy invite exploration through various mediums like collage, sculpting, mask-making, or even digital art. This allows for the externalization of internal landscapes – feelings, memories, and ideas that might be too complex or overwhelming to verbalize. The act of creating, shaping, and even destroying an image can be incredibly cathartic, offering tangible representations of abstract emotions and new ways to "see" and understand challenges. There's no need for artistic skill; the focus is entirely on the process and what emerges.
Poetry & Creative Writing: Whether it's crafting a free-verse poem, journaling, storytelling, or even creating a "found poem" from existing text, written expression provides a unique avenue for introspection and articulation. Poetry, in particular, can distill complex emotions into poignant metaphors and imagery, offering a safe container for difficult feelings. It allows individuals to gain distance from their experiences, reframe narratives, and discover new meanings in their personal stories, giving voice to what might otherwise remain unsaid.
Play is often associated with childhood, play is a fundamental human activity vital for growth and exploration at any age. In expressive arts therapy, "play" involves engaging with imagination, spontaneity, and experimentation. This might manifest as sand tray work, using miniatures, role-playing, improvisational games, or engaging with tactile materials. Play creates a safe, "as-if" space to explore difficult situations, practice new behaviors, externalize inner conflicts, and discover creative solutions without the pressure of real-world consequences, fostering resilience and a renewed sense of possibility.
Movement: Our bodies hold profound wisdom and memory. In expressive arts therapy, movement isn't about choreographed dance, but rather about authentic, spontaneous physical expression. Through gentle exploration, stretching, rhythmic movement, or even role-playing, individuals can release tension, process trauma, connect with their physical sensations, and explore relational dynamics. It fosters a deeper mind-body connection, allowing emotions to be moved through the body, leading to a sense of release and integration.
Music & Voice: The universal language of music offers powerful access to emotions and memories. This can involve listening to specific pieces, creating sounds with simple instruments, singing, humming, or even exploring the quality of one's own voice. Music can evoke feelings, regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and stimulate creativity. It provides a non-verbal channel for expressing what is deeply felt, fostering emotional release and a sense of harmony within.
